2003 Indianapolis 500 Winner Gil de Ferran Dies

Former 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner Gil de Ferran has died of a heart attack at the age of 56 while at a private motor racing club in Opa-locka, Florida, on Friday.

Since May 2023, De Ferran had worked as a consultant for McLaren’s Formula One team after having previously served as McLaren’s sporting director from 2018 to 2021.

The French-born Brazilian driver won five races in the Indy Racing League [IRL] in 2003, including the Indianapolis 500 [after fending off fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves].
