2016 Dakar Rally Lead Belongs To Peterhansel

Stephane Peterhansel of France finished third for Peugeot in Monday’s eighth stage of the 2016 Dakar Rally, but that was good enough to move the Frenchman into the overall lead in the car category. Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar won the stage, 12 seconds ahead of Carlos Sainz of Spain and 31 seconds in front of Peterhansel.

Leading the competition at this stage is no stranger to Peterhansel, who is a record-holding 11-time winner of the Dakar Rally — five in cars, and six on bikes.

Meanwhile, in the bike portion of the race, Australian rider Toby Price won Monday’s eighth stage and took the overall lead. Price finished 5:17 in front of Paulo Goncalves of Portugal. Pablo Quintanilla of Chile was third, 6:32 behind. Price leads Goncalves by 2:05 in the overall and is 14:14 ahead of Stefan Svitko of Slovakia.

The rally ends Saturday in Rosario, Argentina.
