As expected, the 2021 The Turkish Grand Prix has been cancelled due to travel complications/restrictions caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic after Turkey was hit by a recent surge in cases. The race will be replaced by a second race in Austria to be held the week before the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix.
The 2021 Turkish Grand Prix had only been added to the Formula One racing calendar a mere six weeks ago in an effort to replace the 2021 Canadian Grand Prix, which was itself cancelled due to similar Covid-19 travel complications/restrictions as Canada wrestles with a stubborn case positivity rate and vaccine supply issues.
The second race will be, once again, referred to as the Styrian Grand Prix, as it was last year when it was held as a replacement race for the multitudes of races which were cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2021 Styrian Grand Prix is currently scheduled to be held on June 27, 2021 at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria.
The revised 2021 F1 race calendar now has the Monaco Grand Prix up next on May 23, followed by the French Grand Prix on June 20, the Styrian Grand Prix on June 27 and the Austrian Grand Prix on July 4.
F1 says it has conducted 17,000 Covid-19 tests to date this year and has recorded 15 positive cases, a scant rate of 0.1%, but also an average of three positive cases per month.
Future F1 races in Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Singapore and the USA remain in jeopardy of being cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as well as other issues. The Australian Grand Prix has already been postponed and moved from its original March spot to November.
