With two new rules in effect – Mercedes returned to form as the fastest Formula One cars in the first practice session for this weekend’s 2021 French Prix – with Valtteri Bottas doing the honors and edging his teammate, seven-time defending F1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton.
Two new rules – focusing on rear wing flexibility and tire pressures – were officially in effect beginning with this race after it was determined and/or implied that some teams were attempting to circumvent race requirements in previous races.
