Alex Zanardi Returns To Racing

After suffering the loss of both his legs in a horrific 2001 crash, former Formula One driver Alex Zanardi is returning to racing for the BMW Motorsport team at the Blancspain Sprint Series. In the 2001 crash at Lausitz, Zanardi was t-boned as he was coming out of the pits by Alex Tagliani and the crash tore off the front half of his car and ultimately resulted in the amputation of both legs [one at the knee and one above the knee]. After dedicated himself to the sport of handcycling, Zanardi won gold medals at the 2012 London Paralympics. Zanardi’s BMW GT3 car will be specially fitted with hand controls.

The seven-race Blancspain Sprint Series will begin at Nogaro, France on April 21, 2014.
