McLaren announced that Fernando Alonso will not drive for them in the second Formula One race of the 2016 season at Bahrain this weekend due to his continued recovery from his crash at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
Replacing Alonso and getting his first well-deserved Formula One race is Stoffel Vandoorne. Vandoorne is notable in the racing world for being the best non-pay driver who had yet to get an F1 ride. Vandoorne has dominated GP2 racing recently – including several wins at Bahrain – and the only reason he hasn’t appeared on an F1 team any sooner is due to his lack of ability to bring a financial banking account with him.
Don’t be surprised to see Vandoorne contesting for Top 10 positions at Bahrain if the McLaren can hold out until the end of the race.
