Bernie Wants To Buy Brazilian Grand Prix Track

Interlagos – the site of the most recent Brazilian Grand Prix – is in the financial crosshairs of former Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone. According to Joao Doria – the mayor of Sao Paulo – Ecclestone is expected to make a bid to purchase the track.

The reason it is being sold in the first place is an attempt to guarantee its future on the Formula One racing calendar especially with the Brazilian economy in the throes of one of its worst recessions ever in over a century. Besides being the former chief of F1, an additional reason Ecclestone might be interested in purchasing the track is because he lives in the country part-time with his wife Fabiana.

So far though, it is merely speculation from Doria as Ecclestone, for his part, has remained non-committal on the subject other than indicating he might participate in the upcoming auction for the site but speculating himself that current F1 owners Liberty Media would consider doing the purchasing.

Interlagos race is currently set as the penultimate race of the season on the 2017 calendar.
