With seven laps left in the Auto Club 400 in Fontana, California, Jimmie Johnson was cruising in for what he most likely thought was going to be a comfortable victory until…one of his tires blew and set off a race-ending melee for the checkered flag. Jeff Gordon inherited the lead but with a mere two laps remaining, Clint Bowyer spun and sent all three contenders left – Gordon, Kurt and Kyle Busch – into the pits for new tires for the remainder of the race. Younger Busch brother Kyle elected to change only two tires – allowing him to restart in second place – and won the race.
Kyle Larson finished second and Kurt Busch was third and Johnson tumbled all the way to 22nd.
