Carlos Sainz, Jr. Wins 2023 Singapore Grand Prix

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, Jr. led from start to finish to win the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris with both holding off the charging Mercedes of seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton who claimed the third and final podium position after his teammate, George Russell, crashed on the last lap.

Sainz, Jr. was on pole position to start the race and held on to that place for the entire race. Hamilton passed both Russell and Norris on the first corner but had to go off track to do so and gave back both positions in the next few laps.

A safety car was deployed on Lap 20 after Williams’ Logan Sargeant hit the wall and all the top eight cars went in for a pit stop with Hamilton passing the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc in the process creating a top four of Sainz, Jr., Russell, Norris and Hamilton on Lap 25 that remained unchanged until Lap 43 when Alpine’s Esteban Ocon suffered a gearbox failure and both Mercedes of Russell and Hamilton elected to pit for medium tires while Sainz, Jr., Norris and Leclerc chose to remain on track on hard tires.

Both Russell and Hamilton passed Leclerc on Lap 53 and 54 of the 62-lap race and caught up with Sainz, Jr. and Norris on Lap 57 but were both unable to pass either car with Russell crashing on Lap 62 to give Hamilton the final podium position.

With the result, Hamilton moves into third place overall in the 2023 Formula 1 driver standings led by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen with 374 points over Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez with 223 points and Hamilton now with 180 points.
