Fabled Ferrari Engineer Mauro Foghieri Retires From Lifelong Race

Fabled Ferrari designer and engineer Mauro Forghieri has died at the age of 87.

Forghieri was at the helm of Ferrari through four Formula One drivers’ championships and seven constructors’ titles during his 27-year stint with the team.

Forghieri was responsible for designing some of Ferrari’s most famous cars – such as the 312 T series that won three drivers’ and four constructors’ titles from 1975-79 – and was the first engineer to put aerodynamic rear wings on a car, at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix.

Forghieri also designed Ferrari’s first turbocharged engine [in 1981] – albeit four years after Renault used the technology in Formula 1 – and that enabled Ferrari to become the first team to win the constructors’ title with a turbo car in 1982.
