Former F1 Driver Marcus Ericsson Wins IndyCar Detroit Grand Prix First Race

Former Formula One driver Marcus Ericsson won his first IndyCar race, taking Race One of the 2021 Detroit Grand Prix.

The 30-year-old Swedish driver took advantage of Will Power’s misfortune when Power was the leader entering a late-race restart but Power’s car suffered a mechanical failure and could not re-start the race. That allowed Ericsson to take the lead and win the race.

Ericsson spent five seasons in F1 – from 2014-18 – racing for Caterham and Sauber, where he started 97 races and scored 18 points but never recorded a podium finish – his best result was an eighth-place finish in the 2015 Austrian Grand Prix during his final season with Caterham.
