Formula One Reveals Six Venues For Sprint Races In 2024

Formula One announced that there will be six venues for the sprint race events in the 2024 season – at the grands prix in China, Miami, Austria, Austin, Sao Paulo and Qatar – along with the likelihood that changes to the current format would also occur in those race events.

Changes to the current sprint race format being discussed include a reverse sprint grid and to move qualifying for the sprint to Friday and hold the shorter race on Saturday before the actual grand prix qualifying.

All potential changes will be discussed at a meeting of the F1 Commission – which comprises F1, governing body the FIA and all 10 teams – in January 2024.

The first sprint race event of 2024 is currently scheduled to be held at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix on the weekend of April 19-21, 2024. If it occurs, this will be the first Chinese Grand Prix to be held since 2019 after the race endured difficulties emerging from the Covid-19 pandemic from 2020-2023.

The 2024 Miami Grand Prix on the weekend of May 3-5, 2024, is next up on the sprint race list and will be holding a sprint event for the first time.

The other four sprint race events are all scheduled to be held at venues which have previously held sprint races – the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix [on the weekend of June 28-30, 2024], the 2024 USA Grand Prix [on the weekend of October 18-20, 2024], the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix [on the weekend of November 1-3, 2024] and the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix [on the weekend of November 29 to December 1, 2024].
