Formula One Signs Up With Pirelli Through 2019

Formula One has announced that Pirelli will remain as the sole tire supplier for the organization through the 2019 racing season. Although the deal had been originally agreed upon late last year, it was not officially formalized until today.

Next season will be particularly significant for Pirelli as new rule changes will allow for bigger, wider tires that should, in turn, make Formula 1 cars significantly faster. To prepare for this change, Pirelli will be allowed to test this summer [pending an agreement between the FIA and the teams] with 2012, 2013 or 2014-spec cars, using various tires from the current sizes.

Pirelli re-joined Formula 1 in 2011, ousting Bridgestone and fending off Michelin to remain as the sport’s sole tire supplier.
