The eel-like Pacific hagfish – for some reason – are considered a delicacy in South Korea. That is confusing news for most human beings, good news for some human beings employed in the hagfish export business and bad news for hagfish in general.
The result, this week, on Highway 101 in the state of Oregon was bad news for everybody when a truck carrying hagfish to be deported to their eventual Korean destination, crashed and sent hagfish flying all over the road as well as a few unlucky cars. The Pacific hagfish emits slime when it is stressed and so, not surprisingly, there was a lot of hagfish stress and a lot of corresponding slime.
