Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton was AutoSportsNation’s 2018 in the Bernie Ecclestone Doofus Moment Award competition, narrowly defeating a game effort from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen – but to prove he was not done being a doofus in 2018, Hamilton gave a bonus performance at the recent BBC Sports Personality of the Year event where he proceeded to recall how it was a dream of his to “get out” of the place where he was born [Stevenage], which he referred to as “the slums”.
Needless to say, current residents of the so-called Stevenage slums were not amused and took to various social media channels to vent their disapproval.
The five-time F1 world champion has not commented further on his choice of words.
