Hamilton Wins As Mercedes Dominates Again At British Grand Prix

It was looking like another standard, garden variety 1-2 finish for Mercedes at the 2014 British Grand Prix in Silverstone, when current Formula One season leader Nico Rosberg took a commanding six-second lead over his teammate Lewis Hamilton after Hamilton began the race in sixth due to poor qualification. But after having built up that big lead 29 laps in, Rosberg suffered his first mechanical issue of the year when his gearbox failed – allowing Hamilton to breeze home as the easy winner – by 30 seconds – over distant runner-up Valtteri Bottas of Williams-Mercedes with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo edging out McLaren’s Jenson Button for the final podium spot. Four-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel claimed fifth.

The race was delayed an hour after Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen collided with Williams-Mercedes’s Felipe Massa – knocking both of them out on the first lap and bringing out the safety crew. While 17 cars finished the race – only nine were on the lead lap at the end.

In the season point standings, Rosberg extends the season lead over Hamilton with 165 points to Hamilton’s 161 followed by Daniel Ricciardo in a distant third with 98 points.

The 2014 Formula One racing season continues with the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim on July 20, 2014.
