Both the IndyCar Series and its star attraction venue – the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – have been sold to Penske Entertainment Corporation by the Hulman family [who owned the speedway for 74 years].
Tony Hulman bought the speedway in 1945 and successive waves of the Hulman family have owned it ever since and then most recently created the IndyCar Series and Indianapolis Motor Speedway Productions – both of which are also part of the deal to Penske Entertainment. [Penske Entertainment Corp. is a subsidiary of Penske Corp., which is owned by the billionaire Roger Penske, a former racer and a current IndyCar team owner who has the most Indy 500 wins with 18].
The Hulman family matriarch, Mari Hulman George – daughter of Tony Hulman – died last year and Tony George [the grandson of Tony Hulman, has long run the speedway and its properties along with his sister] has now officially turned over all of the family’s racing properties to the Penske Entertainment Corp. for an undisclosed amount.
