British photographer James Ball – aka docubyte — has created a digital restoration series celebrating the 1968-79 heyday of the Italian concept cars originating from world-famous design shops such as Bertone and Pininfarina, which were usually not mass produced and remained as one-offs.
Behold the 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo [doing a good impression of the Dome Zero], the 1969 Autobianchi Runabout [looking like your favorite Hot Wheels car], the 1969 Alfa Romeo 33/2 Coupe Speciale [hiding those butterfly doors and pop-up headlights], the 1970 Ferrari 512S Modulo and, of course, the 1976 Ferrari Rainbow, which you will swear on a stack of bibles is really a Fiat X1/9.
Ball/Docubyte photographed the cars on location at the Museo dell’Automobile in Turin, the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Milan, and Parco e Museo del Volo in Marese, before digitally restoring each. Some of the vehicles have been sold to private owners and and have been preserved.
