After a lengthy delay due to rain and wet track conditions, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the sprint race at the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix.
Once the race began after numerous formation laps, Verstappen elected to remain out on the track on his heavy wet tires while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, starting behind him, decided to pit for intermediate wet tires. That decision gave Piastri the brief lead over Verstappen on the second lap. However a Lap 4 crash from Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso brought out a safety car and that gave Verstappen another chance to overtake Piastri, which he promptly did on Lap 6.
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly claimed the third and final podium position.
