Numbers have officially been assigned for the 2014 Formula One racing season – and life. World champion Sebastian Vettel, as was his right as world champion, retained two numbers – 1 for the 2014 season and 5 for his career. Runner-up Fernando Alonso selected 14 because he considered it lucky while Kimi Raikkonen went with another number considered lucky – 7 – but mainly for the reason that he had the number last year and “saw no reason to change it”.
The new rule assigns a number to a driver for life they can market their image in association with the number as happens in other motor racing series.
