P1 Porsche in Stuttgart

The brains of the 1898 P1 Porsche.

It was only five measly horsepower and it could only achieve a top speed of 22 mph but that’s not important. What’s important is that it is a Porsche that even Porsche-collectors like Richard Hammond and Jerry Seinfeld don’t have – the P1 Porsche – the first Porsche ever built by Ferdinand Porsche [though technically it’s called an Egger-Lohner C.2 Phaeton]. The P1 was an electric vehicle built by Porsche for Jacob Lohner in 1898 and the next year, it won a 24-mile-long international electric vehicle race in Berlin – by a whopping 18 minutes over its nearest rival.

The 1898 P1 Porsche will be on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany on February 1-2, 2014.
