Formula One has officially added the Portuguese Grand Prix to the 2021 calendar as the third race of the season on May 2, 2021 at the Portimao circuit in the trendy Algarve region of Portugal.
The 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix was one of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton’s 11 victories last year on his way to claiming his seventh F1 world championship.
The 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix was added after both the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and Chinese Grand Prix were unable to host their scheduled events at their usual early spring places on the calendar due to Covid-19 pandemic concerns. The Australian Grand Prix has since been moved to November but the Chinese Grand Prix has yet to be re-scheduled.
Meanwhile, officials of the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix – to be held on June 6, 2021 – have announced their race will be held with no spectators due to the ongoing pandemic.
