Warner Bros. is currently in negotiation mode trying to re-launch the iconic car movie, “The Cannonball Run”.
The original film was based on the famously illegal cross-country “Cannonball Run” race but the new film is not intended to be a remake of that film, rather a “re-launch” of the film and franchise.
The original 1981 film was directed by Hal Needham ands starred Burt Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Farrah Fawcett-Majors, Dom DeLuise, Jamie Farr, Adrienne Barbeau – and a young Jackie Chan as “Subaru Driver #1”. It spawned two sequels – in 1984 and 1989.
The new version is being attempted by Warner Bros., which acquired all sequel and remake rights to the franchise from original copyright owners Brock Yates, the Hal Needham Estate and Fortune Star LTD.
