General Motors announced today that they will be cutting production on all those models as well as slashing their North American workforce – to the tune of approximately 14,700 jobs – when they begin halting production next year at three assembly plants in Lordstown, Ohio, Hamtramck, Michigan, and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Additionally, two transmission plants in Baltimore and Warren, Michigan, respectively, are also closing, but production from those plants could shift to other models.
The models built at the three plants slated for closure are the Chevrolet Cruze, the Cadillac CT6 and the Buick Lacrosse while the Chevrolet Volt, Impala and Cadillac XTS would also be discontinued.
The GM plant in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada – which produces the XTS and Impala – is expected to close in December 2019.
GM said it will shift more investment to electric and autonomous vehicles.
