Sergio Perez Wins 2022 Singapore Grand Prix

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez won the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix – but not until after enduring a post-race investigation for a pair of safety car infractions that could have given the victory to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who finished second, with his Ferrari teammate, Carlos Sainz, Jr., claiming the third and final podium position in a safety car-strewn race.

Leclerc began the race on pole position but the race start was delayed for just over an hour due to a heavy thunderstorm which washed over the track. Upon the race start, the track was still wet and all cars began on the intermediate tires but was peppered with four safety cars in the first 30 laps as the drivers struggled with the wet-dry conditions.

During one of the safety cars, Perez seemingly incurred a pair of infractions and race stewards decided to investigate those after the race – eventually handing Perez a five-second penalty which reduced his margin of victory but still allowed him to be victorious over Leclerc in the race.

With Perez’s victory officially confirmed, Perez’s Red Bull teammate, Max Verstappen leads the 2022 Formula One driver’s championship with 341 points to 237 for Leclerc, 235 for Perez, 203 for Mercedes’ George Russell, 202 for Sainz, Jr. and 170 for seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton.
