Despite changing course slightly, Super Typhoon Hagibis is continuing on its course toward the Suzuka race track – site of Saturday’s 2019 Japanese Grand Prix – as the superstorm shifted from an expected landfall on Kyushu to a more direct landfall on the island of Honshu [where Suzuka is located].
Although the storm is currently categorized as a Super Typhoon [equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane], it is expected to weaken by the time it reaches Honshu and Suzuka on Saturday, potentially affecting both qualifying and the race itself with heavy winds and rain.
As of Tuesday, Super Typhoon Hagibis was recording sustained winds of 120mph and gusts up to 170mph, according to the Japanese Meteorological Service.
