The 1981 DeLorean From Back To The Future Is Still Alive

Probably one of the most recognizable cars in movie lore is the 1981 DeLorean used as a time-traveling machine in “Back to the Future” starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown.

The movie was an instant hit when it debuted in theaters, going on to become the highest grossing film of 1985 and grossing $507 million worldwide. The car – alas – was not. The stainless steel DeLorean DMC-12, with the gull-wing doors sold only 9200 models between 1981—83 and the company filed for bankruptcy after John DeLorean’s arrest on drug trafficking charges.

Five DMC-12’s along with a fiberglass replica used for the flying scenes in the movie, were used for the film and only three remain in existence – one of which is being used by owner Eric Sellin of New Jersey, who dresses as Doc and takes the car around the country on tour with Marty [played by Matt Bell].
