The 2020 Chinese Grand Prix – currently scheduled to be held on April 19, 2020 in Shanghai – may be in jeopardy due to the coronavirus outbreak in China.
Formula One and Chinese race authorities have yet to make a determination of a possible course of action should the coronavirus outbreak worsen or continue into April but options include delaying, postponing or cancelling the race.
The coronavirus outbreak has already been declared a global health emergency – there have been more than 17,000 confirmed cases of the virus in China and 361 people have died – and it will be one of the main topics on the agenda of Wednesday’s F1 strategy group meeting where the sport’s governing body [FIA] and commercial rights holder [Liberty Media] discuss active issues in the sport.
The Formula E series has already cancelled their planned race scheduled for Sanya in southern China on March 21, 2020.
The FIA has already issued a statement saying they were “monitoring the evolving situation” and would “evaluate the calendar of its forthcoming races and take any action required to help protect the global motorsport community and the wider public”.
