Top Gear Series 22, Episode 4 Recap

The much-awaited fourth episode of the season with actor Will Smith as the featured guest finally arrived. But before Smith took his spot on the stage, there was the little matter of a few road tests. First up was the Mercedes AMG GT, which James took around the track and declared to be acceptable despite its GT-ness and his aversion to any of the wilder elements Mercedes typically installs in their AMG-ized cars. Stig took the Mercedes AMG GT around the Top Gear test track in 1:17.5, slightly better than the Nissan GT-R – widely acknowledged to be the best car in the world at the moment – however the Mercedes AMG GT comes in quite a bit higher in the financial department, carrying a price tag of $170,000.

Next up was the BMW i8 and Jeremy. Although it was expected that Jeremy would not like the new dual engine [gas and electric] BMW hybrid because, well, he has generally indicated disdain for hybrids, he surprised and proclaimed the i8 to be a better choice than the BMW M3 once they get the teensy weensy problem of telling the truth about the miles per gallon settled – as BMW claimed that the car could get 134 miles per gallon when Jeremy found that, on actual roads with actual traffic, it was more like 31 miles per gallon – oops.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie were guests this week

Will Smith came on along with his co-star Margot Robbie from their new movie “Focus” to take turns at laps in the Reasonably Priced Car. With Smith hampered by the right-side driver change in positioning and Robbie, an Australian, not, the lap times wound up being a virtual dead heat with Robbie nipping Smith at the line by one-tenth of a second.

Finally, the show concluded with an Ode to The Land Rover Defender – which is being discontinued – with Richard doing the honors.
