Verstappen Wins 2022 Spanish Grand Prix

Max Verstappen led a Red Bull went 1-2 finish at the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix as Mercedes’ George Russell finished a distant third in the final podium position.

Ferrari had dominated the practice and qualifying sessions leading up to the race with Formula One series leader Charles Leclerc taking pole position and Leclerc was well on his way to a similarly dominant victory in the race when disaster struck on Lap 28 and his engine failed, causing him to retire from the race.

With Leclerc absent, Verstappen had a mostly easy time – despite battling pesky DRS [Drag Reduction System] issues – dispatching of Russell with his teammate, Sergio Perez able to grab second as well as the fastest lap point for the race.

Russell’s teammate – seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton – began the race in sixth but was hit by Haas’ Kevin Magnussen on the opening lap and was forced to pit on the second lap but roared back to fourth place before a last lap issue with his car obliged him to lay off the pace and drop back to finish fifth.

With the victory, Verstappen now overtakes Leclerc for the season lead in the driver’s championship – with 110 points to Leclerc’s 104 points.
