Vettel Wins 2019 Canadian Grand Prix, Stewards Gift Race To Hamilton

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel won the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix on the track – but off the track, Formula One stewards assessed him a five-second penalty after he briefly slid off the track, onto the grass and then re-entered the track in front of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton – thereby gifting the victory to Hamilton. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished in the third and final podium position.

Vettel was the pole-sitter and led the race from start to finish with the exception of a two-lap pit crossover period in the middle of the 70-lap race. But while leading Hamilton by less than a second on Lap 48, he careened across a small strip of grass in a tight corner and, struggling to regain control, slid out back onto the course in front of Hamilton, preventing him from taking the lead.

F1 stewards immediately launched an investigation and concluded their investigation by giving Vettel a five-second penalty, ultimately handing the race win over to Hamilton on a silver platter.

With the “win”, Hamilton leads the 2019 F1 driver’s championship with 162 points over his Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas with 133 points while Vettel sits in third with 100 points.
