Last year’s rookie of the year, William Byron, won the pole position for the first race of the 2019 NASCAR season, next weekend’s Daytona 500.
Byron clocked a 194.304 mph lap to edge out his Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Alex Bowman. The 21-year-old Byron and 25-year-old Bowman make up the youngest front row in Daytona history.
Jimmie Johnson and Chase Elliott grabbed the second row behind Byron and Bowman.
