Constantly struggling Formula One team Williams has finally been put out of its misery – at least temporarily – and been sold to New York City-based private investment firm Dorilton Capital. The sale marks a somber end to their 43-year run as a family-owned team begun by founder Frank Williams in 1977.
Williams, however, will continue to race under the Williams name – for now – and will remain at their Grove headquarters in England. The deal – whose terms were undisclosed – for Williams Racing was supported unanimously by the board, including the 78-year-old founder Williams.
While Williams has currently been experiencing poor results, they were a force early on in their development and are the third most successful constructor in the sport’s history, with 114 wins and 16 titles – although their last measurable successes occurred in the late 1990s and a Williams car has not only not won a race since 2012, the team finished last overall in 2019 and are on pace to repeat that result this year after the first six races of the season.
